Discover one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular natural landscapes on this 4-day trekking and wildlife adventure in the Bale Mountains National Park. From alpine plateaus and crater lakes to dense cloud forests, this tour offers excellent opportunities to see endemic wildlife such as the Ethiopian wolf, Mountain Nyala, and Menelik’s bushbuck, combined with scenic hikes and authentic highland experiences.
Tour Plan
Fly or drive from Addis Ababa to Bale Goba, where you will be met by our driver-guide and a local Bale Mountains specialist. Enjoy a short stop in Goba town before continuing to Dinsho National Park, the headquarters of Bale Mountains National Park.
Take a guided hike through the park, home to endemic species including the Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s bushbuck, warthogs, and a variety of birdlife. After the visit, return to Goba town for dinner and relaxation.
Overnight: Hotel in Goba
After breakfast, drive to the starting point for your hike to Lake Gebre Guracha, a stunning alpine lake located at nearly 3,900 meters above sea level. The hike takes approximately four hours and offers a high chance of spotting the endangered Ethiopian wolf along the way. Enjoy a picnic lunch with panoramic mountain views.
Continue driving across the Sanetti Plateau, the highest road in Africa, reaching elevations of 3,700–4,100 meters. Hike around Tullu Demtu (4,377 m), the second-highest peak in Ethiopia, while observing endemic wildlife and high-altitude bird species. Later, descend into the lush Harena Forest.
Overnight: Bale Mountains Lodge
After breakfast, enjoy a scenic hike through the dense Harena Forest, one of Ethiopia’s most biodiverse ecosystems. This three-hour trek offers chances to see forest birds, monkeys, and unique plant life.
Return to the lodge for lunch, then take a shorter afternoon hike to visit the beautiful Bale Waterfalls, surrounded by forest and mountain scenery. Dinner and relaxation at the lodge.
Overnight: Bale Mountains Lodge
After breakfast, enjoy a short morning walk in the forest before driving back to Bale Goba Airport. Fly back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of your Bale Mountains trekking and wildlife adventure.
