Fly from Addis Ababa to Semera and begin your drive across the vast Afar desert. Pass traditional desert villages and dramatic landscapes en route to Hamed Ela base camp. Visit Lake Assale, where endless salt flats reflect the sky, and enjoy a stunning sunset over the Danakil plains. Dinner and overnight at Hamed Ela.
Depart early to witness sunrise at Dallol, one of the most colorful and surreal places on Earth. Explore bubbling sulfur pools, mineral terraces, salt canyons, and observe camel caravans transporting salt across the desert. Continue toward Erta Ale, crossing volcanic terrain. After sunset, hike to the crater to witness the glowing lava lake—an unforgettable natural spectacle. Overnight camping near Erta Ale.
Descend from Erta Ale and drive to Lake Afdera, where you can relax and swim in the warm, mineral-rich waters. Continue the journey toward Mekele, then head to the Gheralta region to visit the spectacular Abune Yemata Guh Church. Drive to Wukro to explore its historic rock-hewn churches, reflecting centuries of Ethiopian Christianity. Continue to Abrha Atsbeha Church, one of Tigray’s oldest and most beautifully preserved sanctuaries, renowned for its vivid wall paintings and ancient stone architecture. Learn about early Christian traditions before returning to Hawzen for dinner and overnight.
Spend the day exploring the spiritual heart of the Gheralta Mountains. Visit Debre Tsion Maryam and Abune Abraham monasteries, dramatically carved into towering sandstone cliffs.
